Chapter 8: Contracting to Win

Four steps are recommended to improve nutritional behavior:

Step 1.  Select the nutrient category that you wish to improve first and get a DINE (+).

Step 2.  Make lists of foods that you should avoid, eat sparingly, or eat in greater quantity to get a DINE (+).

Step 3.  Identify associated behaviors that may contribute to your not getting a (+), i.e., snacking, eating out, skipping meals, inactivity.

Step 4.  Set up a point, chart, and reward system to monitor and improve your nutritional behavior.

You already have the information for the first three steps from the previous chapters and the Computer Labs.  This chapter provides you with techniques for Step 4, setting up a point-chart management and reward system.

Points are rewarding and tell you if you are winning or losing.  Charting provides insight and direction for plotting your course and let you know where you are and more importantly - where you are going.

The beginning of this chapter provides two self-evaluations:
  1. The National Nutrition Objectives Test
  2. How Often Should You Perform A DINE Healthy Analysis Of Your Diet?
If you score 100 on both, you are home free.  If you do not, please continue with the management systems.

This chapter also includes four different management systems that utilize points and charts:
  • Meal Snack Management
  • Physical Activity Management
  • Food List Management
  • DINE Score Management
Feel free to print/photocopy a supply of these tests and management forms in this chapter for your continued use. Click the Print Version link on the left menu.

People who win or who accomplish their nutrition goals not only eat better but transfer this knowledge to their friends and loved ones.  The 'Contract to Win,' a self-management contract, was designed to help you with this task.  It is the finale.  The contract uses multiple management systems to help you share The DINE System with your family and friends for a better life.
